Graduate Temporary 485 Visa

For international students who have completed two years of education in Australia, the Temporary Graduate subclass 485 visa is a work visa. According to your situation, it can be anywhere from 18 months to 4 years long.

As a result, you will have a better chance of obtaining a permanent or provisional skilled visa.

Prior to lodging the 485 visa application, the applicant must be in Australia and have held an appropriate student visa for at least six months.

TWO ELIGIBILITY STREAMS FOR THE TEMPORARY GRADUTE SUBCLASS 485 VISA: Post Study Work Stream (PSWS): This visa is intended for overseas students who have just graduated from an Australian university (at least with a bachelor’s degree). It allows you to temporarily live, work and study in Australia.
The Graduate Work Stream: This is an international visa for students with a recent diploma with qualifications and skills suitable to particular professions in Australia. It allows you to temporarily live, study and work in Australia.
COMMON CRITERIA There are a number of criteria which are common to both the PSWV (Post Study Work Visa) stream and the Graduate Work Stream:

  • Age: At the date of lodging, the principal applicant must be under 50.
  • English: Either by having specific sorts of passports, or performing an English exam, the principal candidate must establish his competence in English. Threshold evidence English is required at the day of accommodation.
  • Study in Australia: In the six months following the application for the visa, you must fulfil the 2 year minimum and have finished your qualifications.
  • Point Test: The visa for temporary graduates 485 is not evaluated by points.
INCLUDING FAMILY MEMBERS You can include the following types of family members in your application:

  • Spouses, de facto partners and same-sex partners
  • Dependent children

If you already have a visa for 485, you can apply for 485 visa for family members in Australia.

DURATION AND CONDITIONS The 485 visa period is determined by your circumstances. Visa are valid 18 months from the date of the application being granted for work stream work.

The PSW duration depends on the qualification and the completion of your education in Australia’s regional area. Your PSW length will be: if you study in Melbourne, Sydney or Brisbane:

  • 2 years: completion of Bachelor Degree, Bachelor with Honours, Masters by Coursework or Masters (Extended)
  • 3 years: Masters by Research
  • 4 years: Doctorate

You have unlimited working privileges in Australia while you are on a 485 visa. During a skilled graduate visa, you must have private health insurance. The main suppliers are listed on the 485 Visa Insurance page.

ENGLISH REQUIREMENTS FOR 485 VISAS The new English requirements for both the Post Study Work Stream and Graduate Work Stream are as follows:

  • Hold a passport from the UK, Ireland, USA, Canada or New Zealand; or
  • IELTS (Academic or General Training): overall average of 6 and at least 5 in each band; or
  • Occupational English Test (OET): B Pass in each band; or
  • Pearson (PTE Academic): overall average of 50 with at least 36 in each band; or
  • TOEFL iBT (Internet Based Test): total score of 64, with at least 4 in Listening and Reading, and at least 14 in Writing and Speaking; or
  • Cambridge (CAE): 169 overall average with at least 154 in each band.

This represents a significant lowering of the English language requirement and will be a great relief to applicants who have struggled to meet the minimum score required in each band.

A COUPLE OF IMPORTANT POINTS TO NOTE:
  • Some skills assessment authorities (eg the Accounting Professional Bodies) require English testing for the Graduate Work skills assessment – there is no indication as yet as to whether the assessment authorities will change their English language requirements.
  • If completing the OET, the required scores have not changed.
  • The English requirements for the Recognised Graduate Subclass 476 visa are similar.
