The Skilled Migration Points Test

In order to get the following skilled migration visa, a points-based test must be passed:

  • Skilled Independent visa (subclass 189)
  • Skilled Nominated visa (subclass 190)
  • Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) subclass 491 visa

The minimum score for any visa is 65 points. To be invited to apply for a visa, you need to have a high score.

Points are granted based on the following criteria.

It's important that when you're invited to apply for a visa, that you indicate that you've achieved the score that was specified in your Expression of Interest document.

  • During employment points, you must have worked in your nominated skilled profession or a closely similar skilled occupation within the 10 years prior to being invited to apply, and for the applicable periods as listed below.
  • This means that you must have held a substantive or Bridging A/B visa and adhered to its terms in order to be eligible for points for any Australian work.
  • Employed means working at least 20 hours a week for a salary.

Closely-related occupations must be:

  • Either in the same ANZSCO Unit Group, OR
  • Congruent with a career progression pathway, OR
  • As part of your skills evaluation, by an evaluating body that it is closely relevant to your nominated occupation.

For employment experience, there is a maximum number of points that can be awarded. Because the maximum number of points that can be granted is 20, you will only receive 20 points if you score more than 20 total points for your employment experience.

Educational qualifications

A Doctorate from an Australian educational institution or a Doctorate from another educational institution, that is of a recognised standard. 20

For points based migration you will receive points for your highest qualification only.

Recognition of your qualifications

Your qualifications may be compared to the relevant Australian qualification by the authority conducting your skills assessment. Assessment authorities for your occupation are mentioned in the list of skilled occupations that apply to you. When you are invited to apply for a visa, you must have received this recognition.

Doctoral requirements (PhD)

Points for a doctoral degree can only be awarded if you have finished the necessary qualification, which is a Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). It is not possible to use these points to obtain additional qualifications that give you the right to use the title of Doctor (that is, general practitioner, dentist, vet).

Specialist education qualification

A Masters degree by research or a Doctorate degree from an Australian educational institution that included at least academic years study in a relevant field. 10

An Australian education institution must grant a postgraduate by research degree (doctoral or master’s) to a student who has completed at least two academic years of study in one of the following fields:

Australian study requirement

This means you must have at least one Australian study requirement-compliant degree, certificate, or trade qualification from a recognised Australian institution.

Professional Year in Australia

Requirement Points
Completion of a professional year in Australia 5

This means you must have at least one Australian study requirement-compliant degree, certificate, or trade qualification from a recognised Australian institution.

  • Your profession or a closely related field.
  • To have been completed within a year.
  • Four years before you are eligible to apply for a visa in Australia.
  • By a member of one of these groups:
    • The Australian Computer Society
    • CPA Australia
    • Chartered Accountants Australia and New Zealand
    • The Institute of Public Accountants (formerly the National Institute of Accountants)
    • Engineers Australia.

Credentialled community language

Hold a recognised qualification in a credentialled community language 5

As a community language credentialed interpreter or translator, you must have been accredited at the paraprofessional level or above. You may also hold a community language credential from the National Accreditation Authority of Translators and Interpreters (NATI) that qualifies you for points.

Study in regional Australia

Requirement Points
When living and studying in a qualifying area of regional Australia you need to have at least one degree, diploma or trade certificate from an Australian educational institution that meets the Australian study criteria. 5

In order to be eligible for the awarding of points, you must:

  • The requirements for studying in Australia.
  • Been achieved while you lived and studied in a particular regional location.
  • Not including distant education studies.

Partner skills

Requirement Points
If you are applying for this visa with your spouse or de facto partner, they must also meet the age, English, and skill requirements.

If your partner is applying for the same visa subclass, he or she must not be an Australian permanent resident or citizen in order to be eligible for the points award. If you were asked for this visa, you will also need to produce proof that:

  • We’re all younger than 45.
  • Had a good grasp of English.
  • Skilled occupation that is on the same skilled occupation list as yours
  • Had a satisfactory skills assessment for their specified skilled occupation from the relevant assessing authority, and the evaluation wasn’t for a Subclass 485 visa.

To be eligible for this visa, your spouse or de facto partner must also be a visa applicant, and have a high level of English proficiency.

If your partner is applying for the same visa subclass, he or she must not be an Australian permanent resident or citizen in order to be eligible for the points award.

Nomination:

Requirement Points
A State or Territory government agency asked you to apply for the Subclass 190 (Skilled – Nominated) visa and has not withdrawn the nomination. 5

To be invited to apply for this visa, you must be nominated by someone who knows who you are. Depending on whether or not your nomination is still valid, you may be entitled for these bonus points.

Requirement Points
After being nominated by your state or territory government agency, you were invited to apply for a Skilled Work Regional (Provisional) visa (subclass 491).

OR

When it comes to visa, the Minister has accepted your family member’s sponsorship for a Skilled Work Regional Temporary (Provisional) visa (subclass 491).

To be invited to apply for this visa, you must have been nominated or stated that you will be sponsored by a family member who qualifies.

You may be eligible for these points if you have been nominated and your nomination is still valid.

Sponsored applicants may be eligible for these points if their sponsorship has been accepted.
